While LG Electronics is fostering organic light emitting diode (OLED) as its next-generation business, its affiliate display maker LG Philips LCD intends to produce small and medium-sized active matrix OLEDs, possibly sparking competition between the two. LG Philips LCD plans to launch production of small and medium-sized active matrix OLEDs early next year, according to industry sources. They said the company would order OLED equipment soon. Since last year, LG Philips LCD has been installing production lines for low temperature poly silicon (LTPS) substrates used for active matrix OLEDs in its plant in Gumi. The company will finish facility investment by the end of the first half of this year. In November last year, LG Philips LCD unveiled a 20-inch active matrix OLED at the FPD International show held in Japan. "Regardless of placement of order for active matrix OLED equipment by LG Philips LCD, LG Electronics will continue developing such OLEDs. No arrangement is yet to be made between the two, but LG Philips LCD may not necessarily be the only active matrix OLED maker," said a manager at LG Electronics. Ahead of LG Philips LCD, LG Electronics commercialized passive matrix OLED last year, and it plans to install second-generation deposition equipment by May to increase its production. "Given that LTPS substrates, deposition and module technologies are key factors for active matrix OLED business, LG Philips LCD, with its LTPS technology and stronger financial ability for investment, will likely take initiative in this business," said an industry observer.
