Under the strategy of bolstering organic light emitting diode (OLED) business, Samsung SDI recently revamped its active matrix OLED team, putting it under direct control of its CEO.
Samsung SDI also decided to absorb Samsung OLED, its subsidiary specializing in passive matrix OLED, on April 1. Samsung OLED supplied 14 million units of passive matrix OLEDs last year accounting for 45% of the market.
"Direct control of the active matrix OLED team by the CEO is manifestation of his strong will to aggressively push the business. With speedy decision-making system, the company is expected to expedite investments in this sector," said a manager at Samsung SDI.
As a part of this strategy, Samsung SDI has been concentrating resources on developing new display technologies. In its exhibition of 'frontier technologies of information displays' held on January 12 and 13, the company unveiled a cutting-edge active matrix OLED panel installed with a driver integrated circuit (IC) with a circuit width of 2§, and a 17.1-inch active matrix OLED panel based on laser color patterning processed in furnace.
"Samsung SDI boasts leading edge technologies in active matrix OLED products. Its research institute is under development of cutting edge technologies for processing low temperature poly silicon panel as well as various deposition and color patterning technologies," said Jeong Ho-gyun, managing director at the company.
"With an expansion of the market for small and medium-sized thin film transistor LCD panels, the market for STN LCDs, the mainstream product of Samsung SDI, is getting smaller, forcing it to concentrate its resources on active matrix OLED. Recent changes in business structure of the company reflect its intention to foster active matrix OLED business," said an industry observer.
