Leading organic light emitting diode (OLED) makers, including Samsung SDI, LG Electronics, Neoview Kolon and Orion Electric plan to put focus on supplying full color OLEDs this year.
Industry sources said on Thursday that these companies would raise the proportion of full color OLEDs to 50 to 100% of the total of their OLED products this year.
"In order to expand OLED market, manufacturers are required to shift displays to full color products as early as possible. Most handset makers also want full color OLEDs," said an industry expert.
Monochrome OLEDs, which accounted for more than 60% of the market last year, are pushed by STN LCDs in the low-end mobile phone market while full color products are competing with thin film transistor LCDs.
Samsung SDI, which developed more than 5 models of 65,000 color OLEDs since latter half of last year, plans to raise the proportion of full color products to more than 50% of its total OLED products this year. The company also developed a 260,000-color OLED, the first of its kind in the industry.
"Adoption of 260,000-color OLEDs in main window of mobile phones and 65,000-color products in sub-window of handsets is expected to increase rapidly. Full color OLED market will be expanded, therefore," said a manager at Samsung SDI.
LG Electronics is currently supplying mostly full color OLEDs, while Neoview Kolon intends to sell only full color OLEDs this year. Orion Electric also plans to raise the ratio of full color OLEDs to more than 90% of its total OLED products this year.
"Given that Rite Display of Taiwan and Pioneer of Japan, which had mainly been supplying monochrome OLEDs until last year, recently began providing full color products, and that display makers will begin volume production of full color active matrix OLEDs this year, the proportion of full color products is expected to account for well over 50% of the world market this year," said an industry observer.
According to Display Search, a market research company, the world OLED market reached 7.11 million units in the second quarter of last year, and full color OLEDs represented 38% of the total.
